What is  periodontal disease?

Periodontal disease is an infection.  These bacterial infections destroy the attachment fibers and supporting bone that hold your teeth in your mouth.  There are many forms of periodontal disease. back to top »

 

What is my risk of having or developing periodontal disease?

Many people have periodontal disease and don’t know it. Approximately 75% of the population has some form of periodontal disease. A self test here will help you assess if you are low, medium or high risk for periodontal disease.

Is it normal for my gums to bleed?

Bleeding gums are one of the warning signs of gum disease.  There are many warning signs that indicate gum disease.  Some of these include: red, swollen gums, gums pulling away from the tooth so that your tooth looks longer, pus from the gums, persistent bad breath, loose teeth, a change in the way your teeth fit together, a change in the way your partial denture fits.

When Should I see a periodontist?

Anytime is a good time to have a periodontal evaluation.  Sometimes the only way to detect periodontal disease is through this exam.  This evaluation is especially important in the following situations:

  • Referred by your dentist due to periodontal disease symptoms
  • Thinking about becoming pregnant
  • Have family member with periodontal disease
  • If you have heart disease, diabetes, respiratory disease or osteoporosis,
  • If you are missing one or more teeth and interested in long term replacement
  • If you are not happy with your current tooth replacement option, such as bridge or dentures and may be interested in dental implants.

What can I expect the first time I visit a periodontist?

When you first visit our office, the periodontist will do a complete review of your medical and dental history.  After, completing a complete periodontal evaluation, you will be educated on your current periodontal health and presented with options which best suit your needs.
